Project 1: Reading Center Bean Bag Chairs

Help me give my students comfortable bean bag chairs they can use to sit in and read during our reading center time.

My Students
My students from Cleveland, Ohio are very excited about reading in 2nd grade. They love to use our classroom library and read books throughout the day. They enjoy sitting on bean bag chairs or the "special seats" as we like to call them in our classroom.

My students love to sit on the bean bag chairs around the room and become engrossed in a book.

Some of my students have even started their own "book club" and read books together during indoor recess time.

We also use the bean bag chairs in the room as a way for students who need an emotional break from the school day to go and relax by themselves until they feel they are ready to join the group again. The comfort of the bean bag chair helps them to calm themselves and regroup so they can get back to learning.

More than 3/4 of my students are on the free and reduced lunch program at school. They live in an economically disadvantaged area of Cleveland. I would like to provide these bean bag chairs to my students so they can see their classroom as a warm and welcoming environment where they feel safe.

My Project
During our reading center time, students can use the bean bag chairs to sit and read a book. There are 6 children in each center so I would need six chairs.

Even my reluctant readers love to lounge in the bean bag chairs and read their books.

My students love to sit in these "special seats" and read. This really gets them motivated to read.

We also use the chairs for students who need to take a break. Sometimes students having difficulty dealing with their emotions and having a place for them to go and relax and take a deep breath to clear their mind helps them to refocus and get back to learning.

Project 2: Educational Fun for Indoor Recess!

Help me give my students board games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders to play at indoor recess. I also want to give them Magnetic Building Tiles and a Play Food Set for creative play.

My Students
My students from Cleveland, Ohio are from very diverse backgrounds. Many students are learning English as a second language. All of them are learning how to communicate effectively and get along with their peers.

More than 3/4 of my students are on the free and reduced lunch program at school.

They live in an economically disadvantaged area of Cleveland. I want my classroom to be a safe place for them to play and learn. Most importantly I want them to learn to get along with their peers.

My Project
Do you remember playing Chutes and Ladders or Candyland with your kids when they were little? Playing board games when they are young is a great example of how kids learn to take turns, share and learn how to be a good sport when it comes to winning and losing. So many valuable lessons to be learned through games.

Many of my students come to 2nd grade sadly without ever having the opportunity to play these classic board games.

I want to provide these games along with some classic card games like Go Fish, magnetic building tiles and a play food set so they can use their imagination and create some masterpieces during indoor recess. In Cleveland, most of the winter months are spent indoor due to the extreme cold. Having a variety of indoor games and activities makes indoor recess a little more exciting for them.

We usually spend a good portion of the day at the beginning of the school year learning how to play Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. Once the students learn the rules they can't wait to play!
